Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
What should I wear to Systema class?
Wear comfortable, modest clothing you can move freely in—sweatpants, leggings, a t-shirt or long-sleeve, and flat-soled shoes or barefoot. No uniforms required. Just dress to move and breathe. -
Should I trim my fingernails and toenails?
Yes, please clip your nails before class to help prevent accidental scratching during partner work. -
Can I wear perfume or cologne?
Please avoid strong scents, including perfumes, essential oils, or heavily scented lotions. Many people are sensitive to fragrances, and we aim to keep the training space as neutral and breathable as possible. -
Will I get punched in the face?
No. At least not initially 🙂 Asheville Systema is a supportive, healing-oriented training environment. We focus on awareness, movement, breath, and nervous system regulation. While some drills involve contact, everything is done with pushing you just outside of your comfort zone. You won’t be thrown into anything you're not ready for. -
What about body odor?
We’re a close-contact martial art, so cleanliness matters. Please come to class clean, wear freshly laundered clothes, and be mindful of body odor. Everyone appreciates it. -
Is water available?
Yes. We provide high-quality spring water at every class. Bring your own bottle or cup, or we have some available to borrow. -
Are snacks available?
We offer ATLAS protein bars for sale at class—nutritious and locally sourced, great for pre- or post-training energy. -
Who will greet me when I arrive?
You’ll be welcomed by one of our friendly greeters: Sheldon the friendly rooster, August the cat, or Pete the cat. And if you're lucky, you might be greeted by a white rabbit hopping around the grounds too -
Where do I park?
There’s free parking on-site at our training location. Just follow the signs when you arrive—it's easy to find. -
Do you have a sauna?
Yes! We offer on Fridays post-training sauna sessions. It’s a great way to relax and integrate the work. Details are shared during class or via email/newsletter updates. -
What’s Pravilo?
Pravilo is a traditional Russian stretching and strengthening device. It helps realign the body, improve joint integrity, and release stored tension. Occasionally, we offer Pravilo sessions by appointment or after class on Tuesdays. Ask Bill or a greeter for more info.
